The EU

Happy Cinco de Mayo

For John, BLUFIt may be that 5 May is as big a holiday in the US as in Mexico—it is not Mexican Independence Day.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

If you believe Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is as much an American tradition as it is a Mexican one.  It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on this date in 1862.

It is to be noted that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated 16 September each year.

Frankly, it is nice to have an independent Mexico on our Southern Border, and not some colony of Spain or France.

The French, under Napoleon III, were taking advantage of a little debt crisis in Mexico and the US Civil War we were "distracted".
