Debbie and Incivility

Yes, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)—Democratic National Committee Chairwoman—does strike me as out of contact with reality, but her trying to hang the shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords (and others) around the neck of the Tea Party seems the sort of incivility that we are supposed to be toning down.

It looks to be an ugly campaign upcoming.

This is stunning for its ignorance and profoundly impolitic. The good news is that reasonable people in the middle can tell the difference between legitimate disagreement, and ad hominem (what's the Latin plural? I should ask my daughter...) slurs based on ignorance and a perverse refusal to see the best intentions of all sides.

From the cited work:

If Wasserman Schultz’ comments capture reality at all it is only insofar as the rise of the Tea Party has also — naturally — coincided with the rise of Tea Party opponents, whose rhetoric is frequently edgy and uncivil. Remember when …

I take this to mean, two wrongs don't make a right. Thing is ... in assault, if you allow a wrong to go unanswered, you have a victim.

DWS wasn't saying that the Tea Party shot Giffords in the face. She was saying that ratcheting the fear and anxiety around politcal discourse leads to this sort of thing. That is true.

The more we dehumanize political opponents, the easier it is to increase the aggression directed at them, e.g. Iran.

No. I'm not comparing Iran to the Tea Party.
