Death by Stoning

From CNN:
Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani, a mother of two, is waiting to die in Iran by a method of execution described by her lawyer as "barbaric"—stoning.

She will be buried up to her chest, deeper than a man would be, and the stones that will be hurled at her will be large enough to cause pain but not so large as to kill her immediately, according to an Amnesty International report that cited the Iranian penal code.

The 42-year-old woman from the northern city of Tabriz was convicted of adultery in 2006, and her execution is imminent, said prominent human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei.
Hat tip to Ann Althouse.

I would think there are limits to multicultural accommodation.

There is a reason the US Constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

That there will be no shortages of "stoners" on the set date is even more troubling to me than the fact that she will be slowly put to death in a most barbaric fashion. Even more troubling is the regard that Muslims hold for women. Of course, lets bear in mind that there is NO penalty in Sharia for men who commit adultery....or even pedophilia.

And from this culture we think we can extract or inspire democracy???

Of course, America hardly has clean hands when it comes to human rights and respect for others....particularly women. We just tend to be a bit more subtle and clandestine in our applications of prejudice.

When it comes to putting someone to death, I am not at all certain where the methodology becomes "humane." There seems to be a growing though suppressed body of evidence that the ballyhooedd pharmaceutical approach is in fact exquisitely painful and terrifying. DuPonts were apparently not correct if they said "Better Dying Through Chemistry." And of course, what white Americans have done through the ages to black, yellow, red, brown people (American or otherwise) is pretty reprehensible.....but the philosophy du jour was "We are white, it is our right......and duty."

Thus, when it comes to man's inhumanity to man, we Americans have certainly at least kept pace with the others. That isn't to say that there are not plenty of Americans who find the behaviors of others quite abhorrent.

That is the problem with the broad brush painting technique.

Sometimes I wonder if we really ARE God's greatest creation....or maybe just an experiment gone terribly, terribly wrong.

That is unfortunate. Im wondering if people believe the woman should be killed or if they just think stoning is too barbaric. If they know the law and break it...
